A product design case study on expanding an MVP through user-driven iterations
How might we create a networking tool leveraging business card context.

Challenge: After launching Carte 1.0—a digital business card storage app—user feedback revealed a critical gap: professionals struggled to follow up with contacts after networking events.
Solution: Designed and shipped Carte 1.1 "The Networking Update" featuring automated follow-up reminders and contact management tools.
Impact: Transformed Carte from a passive storage tool into an active networking assistant, addressing the complete end-to-end networking pain point.
Carte 1.0 successfully solved the problem of digitizing and organizing paper business cards. After shipping the MVP, I focused on the product roadmap to identify the next highest-value feature set.
The opportunity: While users praised the card scanning capabilities, I noticed an unresolved pain point in the broader networking workflow—maintaining connections after initial meetings.
With Carte 1.0 in users' hands, I had the advantage of learning from real-world usage patterns. The key question emerged: "What happens after someone saves a business card?"
Initial observations suggested that storing cards was only half the battle. The real networking value comes from timely follow-ups, which users were still managing manually or forgetting entirely.
I mapped the complete networking journey to identify friction points:
Key insight: Business cards lose value when follow-ups happen too late or not at all. Research shows the optimal follow-up window is 24-48 hours after meeting someone.
I conducted interviews with 3 existing Carte users who participated in the 1.0 research phase. This continuity provided valuable longitudinal insights.
Key findings:
Critical insight: Users needed proactive prompts rather than passive storage to convert contacts into meaningful connections.
Core principle: "What if Carte could remind you to follow up, so you never lose an important connection?"
Feature concepts explored:
Selected approach: Focused on automated reminder using on-device push notification scheduling capabilities, balancing helpfulness without overwhelming users.

Iterate with real users: Post-launch feedback is invaluable. Users of the live product provided insights that pre-launch research couldn't capture.
Solve complete workflows: A feature isn't done when it's functional—it's done when it fits seamlessly into the user's entire workflow.
Balance automation with control: Users wanted help remembering but also wanted autonomy over when and how they follow up.
Ship, learn, iterate: The roadmap beyond MVP should be driven by actual usage patterns, not assumptions. Carte 1.1 succeeded because it solved a pain point that only became clear after 1.0 was in the wild.
Next iteration: Exploring integration with calendar apps to suggest follow-ups based on mutual availability and LinkedIn integration for richer context.
